In July 2004, a heart-warming newspaper article covered the story of a little girl who had written a letter to the president, in which she asked: “Why are there so many children dying of hunger in this country?”

We all know that poverty and hardship is around us, but many don’t realize just how close to home it is. Worse, we have no idea of the extent of the hardship.

In the East of Johannesburg, bordering Germiston and Boksburg, is what has become known as “Ukajede”.

What is Ukajede?

Ukajede is an acronym for five informal settlements namely Ulana, Kanana, Angelo, Jerusalem, & Delmore, located in the East of Johannesburg.
These settlements have an estimated total population of 80 000 living in crude shacks with no sewerage, electricity or running water.

There is no infrastructure in terms of garbage collection, formal road system, street lighting, health care or schools. A large percentage of shacks house families with no adults. The eldest child, usually not older than 10 years of age, has to try and find food and protect the other younger children.
